Pitched roof with no felting

I am looking to insulate my 2nd bedroom which is a loft conversion. The house was originally built around 1850.

I found that it should be a problem insulating between the ceiling and the roof but have since found out that there is no felt between the ceiling the roof and all there is tiles.

The roof is a pitched roof and have read somewhere briefly about what is suggested with regards to felting although i didn't really understand it. I also read somewhere that it is not recommended to use foam.

What i need to know is, should i felt the roof seeing as i need to insulate between the ceiling and roof and if i didn't would the insulation get damp.

If i do need to felt the roof is it a major job and expense as i believe the slate tiles are in good order?

You can not felt the roof without completely removing the tiles or slates and the existing battens which means a new roof would be needed.

If the tiles are leaking they need to replaced. Felt is merely a backup. There are millions of houses without felt.
