I think Monk has taken on BAS as a role model.

True - but talking of 'plug' .... what is clarified, rather than confused, by 'postpending' it (probably no such word, but 'append' doesn't strictly have the right meaning!) with 'top'. If I want a plug, I want the bit with pins attached as well as the rest! It's completely redundant. It's a socket. A plug goes into it. Prepending the word 'plug' in no way clarifies the type of socket. What's so wrong with the term 'plug socket'?

... and I forgot to add .... that (above) is simply not true. Without the word 'plug', it could be a socket I use to undo nuts, the socket of an artifical limb, a socket into which I insert a piece of soil pipe or any number of other types of socket!
Kind Regards, John.
I think you'd have to show me which parts of a nut, amputation stump or piece of pipe could be considered a plug, or have a plug attachedAll of which could be considered a plug or have a plug attached.... Let's face us, the term 'plug socket' niggles most of us, but we all know jolly well what is meant when someone says it, and life is, IMO, too short to get too excited about language which we can understand!
I still want to know about 'plug top' (which certainly niggles me) - I don't even understand how it arose!
I'm not at all sure I agree with that. Admittedly the term is dying out, but I'm not sure that I ever heard it coming from the lips of an 'ordinary' member of the general public - it was those 'in the trade' who seemed to adopt it (not the least, in catalogues and price lists). The same way as 'plug socket', via the ignorant, uneducated masses.I still want to know about 'plug top' (which certainly niggles me) - I don't even understand how it arose!
But not too short to have time wasted by you making (so far) 6 posts about it, containing 142 words.....I believe life is too short to have time wasted by inefficient communication.

There was ( maybe still is ) a foreign socket which had normal receptables for live and neutral bit pin for the earth.
