ptching up walls

Hi,
I own an old house which unfortunatley has very bad walls. I was wondering what is the best compund to use to fill holes made when plaster cracks and falls off. Also how do i get the filled area smooth and level with the existing walls
Any help is nuch appreciated.

You may need to remove the old plaster till you get to solid plaster, take the old plaster back to the house brick, them with a mix of 3 sand to 1 cement do a rough coat, let it dry till it goes a grey colour, then mix your plaster one coat plaster is best, mix till it is smooth and creamy, use a hawk and a plasteres trowel, and in one motion plaster the rough coat cement, to make it smooth have a bucket of cold water and a brush to hand, wash the trowel off but dont dry it, with a little water on the trowel go over the plaster again, and you will get a smooth finish dont flood the plaster, then when you have it as you want it, let it dry for two weeks, before painting or papreing.
