basically.. a few weeks ago there was a rattling coming from the engine bay when in neutral and not touching the clutch. noise goes away when clutch is pressed. took it garage and he said it was likely one of the gears was shot and spinning against the clutch when it shouldnt be a wearing it away. took the front wheel off to do some other work on the car, and when out of gear and in neutral, where you connect the wheel with nuts etc was turning like was in gear and being revved..
iv been having trouble gettin in third gear for a few days and today it wouldnt select any gear at all.. and when could finally get into a gear it would not disengage.

heard it could need a new gearbox completely, new clutch as another option, or just the gear linkage. and help would be really appreciated.

A bit difficult to diagnose without actually seeing the car, Steve, but expect the wheels (maybe) to rotate when they are both off the ground and in neutral...its just oil drag, that one.
As for the noise, when the clutch is pressed, the gears are compressed together to some degree which does reduce any chatter but if yours is excessive then expect internal problems - maybe a main shaft nut a bit loose, or something.
If you can select gears with the engine off then its a clutch issue that you have, but if you still have problems then its a replacement box, I'm afraid.
John :)

Difficulty engaging / dis-engaging gears, usually indicated a clutch problem, the rattling when the car is in neutral that disappears when the clutch is pressed slightly, points to faulty release bearing or pressure plate.
A gearbox centre will soon sort this out for you.

If the noise stops when the clutch is pressed fully, then chances are it's a g/box fault, if you are suffering gear selection problems, it'll be the syncro/baulk rings, rather than the actual gears, as they remain constantly meshed. As you are having difficulty selecting all gears, this may not be the problem, although it's not unheard of for all the syncro/baulk rings to fail, if the box has little or no oil in it.
But a selection problem on all gears usually points to a clutch fault. If the noise stops or is reduced by pressing the clutch pedal a little bit, then that would also point to a clutch problem.

Gearbox will have to come off anyway to check the clutch. If it turns out the clutch is ok then its the gearbox and half the jobs done. Not the end of the world, you could probably get a good serviceable second hand gearbox from a salvage yard.

Think maybe his problem was either solved or scrapped. This thread is a week or so short of 3 years old!!

is it hydraulic or cable btw. if hydraulic check the fluid level, could explain the
engagement issues.
