Polyethylene pipe comes in various guises:

MDPE - Medium Density Polyethlene, water service pipe, gas service pipe, grey water - also known as PE80

HPPE - High Performance Polyethylene, Water and gas service pipe - also known as PE100

XLPE - Cross-linked Polyethylene, push-fit plumbing - also known as PEX

to name just 3.

PE stands for polyethylene and MDPE stands for medium density polyethylene, there is also HPPE high performance polyethylene, so its just different versions of the same thing,

PE in its different guises is used for gas, oil, water and probably a hundred and one other things.

A British manufacturer has hauled its ass into gear and produced a black and green MDPE for rainwater harvesting.....at last!

thank you is the PE that is used for gas jointed by welded joints by a machine think I have heard this before.

its called butt fusion.
Butt fusion is where 2 pieces of pipe are welded end to end by melting the ends of the pipes. No fitting is used in a butt fusion joint.

Electrofusion fittings are available, and can be used for gas (yellow) or water (blue/black).

Philmac (and I think Plasson) do compression fittings for gas MDPE.
