can someone clear this one up please. Is it within the regulations to install a power shower in a bathroom with the electrical supply coming off an existing ring main to RCD fcu, then to shower ? or would you have to install a new cu with RCD so the whole ring main that the spur to shower is supplied from is RCD protected ?

There is not technically any legal requirement to comply with any version of BS7671. The only technical requiment of part P (most of part P is defining notification requirements) is that "Reasonable provision shall be made in the design and installation of electrical installations in order to protect persons operating, maintaining or altering the installations from fire or injury".

Also approved document P (the ODPMs suggestions on how to comply with part P) has not been updated since the 17th edition of BS7671 came in.

As such there is afaict no official position on how much (if any) of an installation needs to be brought up to 17th edition standards when doing new work to the 17th edition.

What do you mean by a "power shower".
Is this the type that heats the water with the water coming from the mains supply. The shower would be rated at something like 8.5KW.

Or is it just a pump and mixer - this is plumbed into the existing (gravity-fed) hot&cold water system.?

There are differing electrical requirements for each type.

A power shower is normally meant as a pump which is on a gravity system.
Often sited in an airing cupboard and not actually in the bathroom.

If this is the case I don't think Part P wouldn't be relevant.

pump is incorporated in shower unit on wall in bathroom, 3A fcu situated in airing cupboard wired from existing ring final circuit. RCD fcu ? or if no RCD protection on CU upgrade to new RCD protected CU? just wanted opinion on RCD protection for special location, be it fcu or new CU

An RCD in the airing cupboard will be fine. No need to upgrade the whole consumer unit, although that would probably be of benefit to other areas of the house.

Notifiable work as the shower unit is in the bathroom.
