Removing black varnish on edge from pine boards

As title suggests I am sanding the floors on my Victorian pine floor.
The varnish is clogging up the sand paper so I want to try and remove it:
Caustic soda?
Nitromorse?

Or just keep grafing with the sander?!

All ideas welcome!

Caustic soda, wallpaper steamer and a stiff brush did the trick!
