removing corupted file

B

breezer

I have no idea how it happened, but i have this "file" that would appear to be corupted.

its for a website, so i copied everything page by page to a new website, so no problems there.

i opened the file , and managed to remove all content except one "page"

lets call it plug.

it shows as being called "plug square square square square" (that is it has 4 squares after plug)

I can not rename it

it has properties of nothing (0 bytes)

if i try and move it out of the file it only makes a short cut (thats normal)

i can not format the hd as too much stuff

any other suggestions?

It happens occasionally.

What have you done to try and rename it, and what was the computer's response to that attempt?

it has properties of nothing (0 bytes)
Eh? But you said that you left one 'page' (whatever that is) inside it?

if i try and move it out of the file it only makes a short cut (thats normal)
Assuming that you mean 'out of the folder' then why are you trying to move it?

i can not format the hd as too much stuff

any other suggestions?
Just delete the file.

it will not let me rename it, it says it can not find it

i am trying to move it out of the folder so i can delete it, but i can because again it says it cant find it

it is the "page" that i want to delete (it looks like apage, but its an icon)

if i could delete it i would be assking here, every time i try it says it cant find it, even though it shows it as being there

OK. Now I understand your terminology.

1. Navigate to the folder containing 'plug'.
2. Create a new folder parallel to that one.
3. Move into the new folder all of the files except 'plug'.
4. Delete the (old) folder, which will also delete its contents (just 'plug').
5. Rename the new folder to be the same as the one you've just deleted.

Thanks, but i tried that too

it does not recognise "plug" and try and move or delete it it says it can;t because it cant find it, even though it can tell you all about it

I have other tricks up my sleeve, but I need clarification first.

Please can you say whether or not you followed the procedure I listed, and, ir so, at what step it failed.

yep, and no (thanks for trying)

i made a new folder (called "new folder" funnily enough)

I have already removed everything except "plug"

as soon as i try to delete the folder with plug it says it cant find it

it actualy says

"can not delete file: cannot read from the scource file or disc"

You could have made that slightly clearly breezer, but I get your drift.

There's a possibility of a hard or soft disk problem underneath this file, so the next task is to run a filesystem check.

The method differs according to which OS (and version) you have there, but, for example, with Windows XP, I would boot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk.

If it has completed the disk check then I'd boot into Windows and see if you can delete the file.

left it while i was in the shower, its finsihed, but to no avail, same problem

In that case can you rename the folder containing 'plug'? This would overcome your immediate problem while trying to find the answer.

It it were mine, then I'd boot into Safe Mode, then open a Command window and try deleting it using the short form filename. If that fails, then it's possible that you have a type of disk problem than chkdsk can't fix.

The next step (if the Command window thing fails), would be to run a surface scan. This needs to be either from the Recovery Console at a boot-time. If that fails then you can use a utility to rectify sector marking failures, and this can also identify a physical sector problem. If the latter is found is then you have two choices:

1. Replace the disk.
2. Low-level format to remap bad sectors.

Either way you would have to backup everything to avoid loss.

Try the Command window first and see how you go.

download free prog called "remove on boot" or it might be "delete on boot".
