removing gas fire from back boiler ?

not got the £ to replace !
That is false economy.
Leave it in, and you will have to do it anyway sooner probably than later, and add more costs because the work that has been done will have to be done again.
Your current systems is extremely wasteful and you are loosing roughly a pound for every one that is available in actual heating. (overall bbu with old cylinder efficiency can well be under 50%)
Tarting the place up before doing the structural stuff is taken care of will double the cost in the long run.
Not to mention the fact that you will have to look at the ugly old thing until it you get a new boiler.

 if he doesnt have it he doesnt have it, or he doesnt want to spend it.

you are assuming he wants to replace it, perhaps he intends to move on soon and has no desire to pay for someone elses heating. perhaps he wants to buy a brand new beemer next month, its his choice and im sure he is aware that its an inefficient ****box.

You would be surprised how many people have no idea that a bbu wastes about a pound for every pound that is actually used/needed.
A bit of a guess to say the least, but I reckon it is about 3:1 when it comes to those who have no idea how much they waste, and those that don't care.

As for being able to afford it or not: the vast majority of people that claim they really don't have the money, no way they can afford it, honest guv, spend the equivalent or moreof a new topnotch boiler, properly installed every year on cable/booze/fags
It is a matter of priorities; it's their life, they can do what they want.

Replace the lot by something suitable for the 21st century, and take between a third and half off your gasbills in the process.

I had an old Baxi BBU replaced in January this year with a Vaillant Ecotec 418 - this was out of necessity not choice. Comparing bills with those of previous years like for like quarters, whereas the bills have not halved owing to increases in gas costs, gas consumption has dropped by just under 50%.
