Removing wall lights and filling/painting - help

Hi - first time poster here, just moved to a new house and have removed two wall lights from the living room as they were a bit old fashioned.

The wires have been left in the block and are poking out of the whole in the wall.

My problem is I don't want lights there, just the smooth wall. I am thinking a way to sort this out would be to make a bigger hole in the wall and tuck the wiring in, and then fill in the hole with filler.

Is this the best way to tackle this?
