happy new year all, ive got a single bulb light fitting in my garage, the wires are as such in the L section there is a wire for the bulb then a black wire with red tape on it, next section Loop 2 red wires, next section N a black wire then the other wire for the bulb, the other light i want to replace it with as a chocolate connector with L-E-N, so what i did was join the 2 red & put in L, 2 black & put in N, 2 green & put in earth, but when i came to turn it on i blew the fuse, can somebody explain what i did wrong please. What you did was completely ignore the way the previous light was wired, and made the silly assumption that the black which had been correctly identified as a live conductor with the red tape was in fact a neutral.

If you think about what you have done, you have connected your switch directly across the supply, causing a short circuit.

You need to put both your reds into an isolated terminal block on their own. The black to the light fittings neutral and the black (marked red) into the light fittings live terminal.

Thanks for the speedy reply lectrician, so what your saying is i connect the black wire with the red tape on into the connector with the red wires, :) Mick

penny as just drop lectrician, what you say is the 2 reds together away from the fitting and not connected to the L fitting connector .then the black to the fitting N connector and the black with the red tape to the L connector :) Mick
