I would just service it and put it back if it works ok.

how would i go about doing that. I am only a humble layman who has leak and is learning plumbing very fast :D

water continues to flow when it is switched off. Does that sound fixable?
sounds like i should see whats wrong when i take it apart

whats a BSP ?
British Standard Pipe. A threaded stopcock as opposed to a compression one.

Take the headworks off, fit new tap washer, replace headwork. Check for contaminants in the valve body, or a damaged seat (where the washer seals in the body.)

You will, obviously, have to shut the water off somewhere in the pipework prior to the errant stopcock.
