Hi All,

I am in need of replacing an old inset gas fire with a modern looking Inset gas fire. Any ideas on the cost of this job for a Gas Safe engineer. It seems almost impossible to find an engineer that wants to fit gas fires these days.

It has been suggested its a full days work and circa £400 for the day.

I appreciate you dont mess with gas so if thats what it is thats what it is.

Thanks

If its only like for like into same hole its only an hours work with a possible slight pipework alteration .
But some fires have a deeper depth than others and inside the fireplace may need some choping out or worse still old coal backboiler still in.

If you talking about one of those big insets that sit high on the wall then it could well be an all day job as they need a fair bit of building work.

So you need someone to look first to give you an idea of prices.

The reason you have trouble getting someone is because the industry is full of heating repairmen who call themselves gas engineers and have not got a clue how to fit something as basic as a fire with the relevant safety procedures

Yep. Agree.

£400 is a lot for a straight swap, even done properly. If we sell the fire we would charge an absolute max of £220, if a chop out is needed. Less if not. Fit only, a little bit more.

hey do you rent the property :( if you do ask your landlord if he will do the fitting for you . is it a bedsit? he might have a spare aluminium sheet and a reel of gas tape in one of is other properties..failing that dont look in the yellow pages for a corgi redg fitter just go to your nearest bookies
