I currently have an outset gas fire that we want to replace.

Inset fires seem cheaper that outset ones, but am I right in thinking that for an inset one you need a fireplace surround?

We don't have a surround at the moment and I thought that with inset fires they can stain your wall black if you don't have a surround.

I would not be fitting the fire myself of course, I just need to know if I need a surround for an outset fire.

Many thanks in advance

A fire surround is advisable for both types of fire in my opinion.

If your present outset fire is one of the radiant/convector fires with a wooden case, they are usually fairly satisfactory without a surround.

Why do you want to change

Why do I want a new fire?

Because mine is old and brass so it doesn't go with anything anymore.
