The mortar that runs along the dpc of the house is crumbling in places and flaking away, particularly on the north side of the property. There is evidence that it has had a bad repairr job done in the past, ie patches of a very very thin skin of mortar over the crumbly stuff, just to hide it i suspect. I am going to repoint, is it ok to remove mortar along the dpc with a plugging chisel. My concern is that some damage may occur to the dpm between the bricks, or is this of little consequence?

damage to the d.p.c. will be negligable. once you have removed loose material (it is sometimes better to use a bolster chisel on the broader d.p.c. ) damp the immedeate area down with water and a paintbrush and re point using 3parts sand 1 part cement.
