I am removing a broken garbage disposal from a kitchen sink. While my training gave me the confidence to safely install a fused spur in a domestic property, without tracing the wiring back to and disconnecting at the ring main I am not confident to safely decommission one.

Looking at the usual texts and searching this forums has not provided me with any answers. disconnection at the ring main will prove very costly for this elderly pensioner.

I shall completely remove the flex from the fused switched connection unit.

What is the best / safest way to proceed next ?

1. terminate the 2 phase conducting cores into plastic 2 way connectors, earth core to the (1 gang metal flush box) earth terminal and cover with a plastic 1 gang blank plate.

2. turn the connection unit into a socket outlet.

either is fine if it was properly wired in the first place

the former is safer if you have doubts about how it is fed
