Hi all,

We are building an extension to our kitchen which will extend about two metres into the garden.

The builder inspector noticed that there is a sewage pipe running under the garden (there is a cast iron covering a bit of it). He now wants to know where this pipe goes so he is kind of suggesting to dig out holes to see where it goes. My question is, is this not specified anywhere in the sewage company? Surely the company that installed the pipes have got plans or something similar showing position etc.

Anyone knows?

You can ask your local water company for a drawing showing the drains in your area but its anybody’s guess if they will show up on their maps or not, not only are they notoriously inaccurate but prior to 2011 many drains that were private (ie not the water company’s responsibility) and are now considered shared have never been mapped anyway.

So unless your water company comes up trumps you will have to get the spade out and don your Sherlock hat or stump up a couple of hundred quid for a drain tracing survey.
