The characteristics of cast iron etc. do change with time. Processes including acid embrittlement (absorbsion of hydrogen) and precipitation hardening (changes to the crystal structure) take their toll.
Micro cracks originating from thermal expansion in the casting process, or the firing of the ceramic components, may propagate through the materials.
