Should this really be an auto bypass valve not a simple gate valve?

Its on the only pipe out from the pump which doesn't run through a 2-port valve and runs back up through the roof (I assume to he boiler return flow) and branches into the water cylinder primary return.

Yea, that should really be an auto bypass, unless it's a right old boiler in which case that's how it used to be done

The only exception being if there is no pump overrun and bypass radiators fitted then there's no need for any valve there at all

Fairly typical installation.

But if no boiler pump over run then does not need to be changed.

There is also a possibility that it goes to a towel rail that is intended to always be on when the boiler is working.

The boiler requires a pump overrun connection but it is not wired up yet because the more I learn, the more I notice other stuff that needs changing like that valve. I'm not sure if it would be better just to connect the overrun wiring and open up that gate valve a little or leave it as it is until I get around the change to an auto valve.
