Shower Extractor Fan doesn't turn off

In the fan connect the red/brown to the Live,
black/blue to the Neutral,
Put some green and yellow earth sleeving on the earth wire and fold it out the way but keep it within the fan.

On the other end take the bare earth that has been used as Switched Live out of the SL terminal and put some green and yellow sleeving on it, connect it to the earth terminal or with the other earths in the switch.
Move the red/brown cable that is going to the fan from the Live terminal into the Switch Live terminal.

This way the fan will come on and go off when you switch the lights on and off. If you want the fan to over-run then you will need to replace the fan and the cable to the fan.

Yes.

At the switch, remove the earth conductor (cpc) to the fan from the switched live connection. Do it now!.

Put the earth conductor on earth at the switch. You still need it.
Put the brown (red?) conductor on the cable to the fan on the switched live (where you removed the cpc).

At the fan connect live to live, neutral to neutral and sleeve the cpc.

Edit: The fan will come on when the light is switched on.
Job done, properly.

Gentlemen,

Why are you advising this unfortunate O/P to fiddle with the switch connections? He has shown a photo of the switch, which led me to assume that the fan had been linked directly to the light fitting and not to the switch. The O/P now says that he has checked that fitting and has confirmed the the cpc has been used as the S/L.

So it's a simple matter of reconnecting that link at the fitting.

JackD. At that light fitting:

Remove the cpc from the switched live, fit green/yellow sleeving and then connect it to the earth terminal of the fitting (or to the connector block with the other cpc's).

Remove the red (going to the fan) from the other permanent (red) lives and reconnect it to the switched live terminal (whence you removed that cpc).

At the fan: Fit green/yellow sleeving to the cpc and tuck it safely out of the way. You already have, apparently, the red and black connected to the live and neutral terminals.

Finally, get a competent person to check your handiwork - not just for this job, but other electrical work that you might have fiddled with.

Lucia.

Hi everyone,

Thanks again for the advice, problem now sorted, it was comming from the light fitting. Switched the wires around as mentioned in your posts. Fan now comes on with the light.

Thanks,
JD
