I've brought a kitchen sink with two bowls and it doesn't have any openings for an overflow. Is this normal and do I need to add some sort of overfowl to the sink and if so how?

Depends what you think is "normal" son ,One should overflow into other and vice versa .Unless you leave both plugs in at same time then your really in soapy bubble!
