I have recently moved into my 1st house which was built in 1989. It has a new bathroom suite and it looks like they put a new soil vent pipe boxed in the corner of the room. The problem is that the vent pipe goes into the loft and steam comes from it when hot water is run! Is this normal?, does it conform to building regs? and what should I do about it?

That seems to have been incorrectly installed and will not comply with the Building Regulations. Might make a bad smell in your loft too!

Unless anyone else can substanciate a reason not to it should be extended up through the roof to the outside and have a bird trap fitted to the top.

Agree Agile, unless there is already a vent to the outside (e.g. from another toilet on another soil stack) then this would be allowed but should be fitted with an AAV.
