Hi Folks - The walls between our house (semi-detached) and the neighbours seems to be very thin. We can hear them closing doors etc. We have recently got a puppy and he whimpers/barks during the night and the neighbours are complaining.. so..

I was thinking some Gyproc WallBoard at 1.25cm deep mounted on some 70x43mm studwork. Once this is on the wall fill the gap with some expanding foam. Once that work is complete cover the wallboard (and holes used to fill) with some standard thickness wall board then plaster?

Does anyone know if this would provide any sound deadening?

Does anyone know of a sound deadening board which would come as an "all in one?"

Nothing seems to work. Better off training the puppy.

Sound leakage is really difficult to deal with, and you could spend a lot of time and money and not achieve an awful lot.

If you do try to sort it out, 3 important things to consider: mass, isolation, sealing measures.

Mass - the heavier the material the more it will generally resist sound. Ordinary plasterboard isn't that great - Soundbloc is better, 2 layers of different materials even better, eg 10mm Fermacell + 15mm Soundbloc. Concrete block even better ;)

Isolation - creating gaps between layers of construction helps as the vibrations from the sound waves can't be directly transmitted across the air gaps. So don't fix the battens directly to the wall - use resilient strips and/or neoprene isolation mounts.

Sealing - Seal all junctions with good quality silicone mastic. Everwhere! Any joint in the construction, eg floor to wall, etc and fill any gaps, cracks, holes, etc.
