Having made the mistake of buying me daughter a hifi for her bedroom, I need to stop some of the sound coming into me thru lounge beneath. At present I've ripped out the ceiling in the thru lounge cos it was lath n plaster and knackered.

I was thinking about two layers of plasterboard or two layers of acoustic plasterboard but have no experience of whether acoustic plasterboard is worth the bother. Whatd'ya think?

And yes, I know I can ask her to turn it down ;)

General opinion seems to be that two layers of ordinary pb (staggered) is better than one layer of acoustic.

If cost is no issue ( that would be a first !) then two layers of acoustic, otherwise you have to weigh up yourself cost vs family happiness vs daughter's "freedom of expression "

Sorry. No absolute numbers in such an instance.

Nice one boys, I will go down the two layers of plasterboard route, out of interest, will putting cavity wall fibreglass batts between the joists soak up some sound or would that be a waste of effort (the price of acoustic mats is not an option)

In my opinion, using batts would be a self-defeating waste of money.

The batts ( more expensive than roll) are treated with some kind of adhesive to stiffen them ( more difficult to compress) and are only of the density of normal thermal insulation where the presence of air is an advantage.

I think you should buy normal roll insulation and compress into the available space to get the maximum density. Personally squashing 100 mm into a 50 mm cavity is about as much as I find manageable
