Starting Problem

Went to start my 6 years old Zafira this morning and all I got was a whirring sound. Know nothing about cars but would be grateful if someone could give me an idea of possible causes.

The battery might be down on charge, not able to engage the starter with the engine.

Can you get someone to give you a jump-start with leads from another car? This may not be the problem, but will eliminate the battery as the cause.

Thanks for your reply. If I can find someone with jump leads I will certainly give your idea a try but I'm fairly isolated here. I have established that it is not a jammed starter
