riff noun, jazz, rock music, pop music a short passage of music played repeatedly, often over changing chords or harmonies, or as an accompaniment to a solo improvisation. verb (riffed, riffing) intrans to play riffs.
ETYMOLOGY: 1930s.

It all comes down your definition of the word "rock riff".

Personally, I'd exclude anything even vaguely 'metal', i.e. with the distinct and tedious 1/4 time signature and a vocal accompaniment from someone who's just drunk some drain cleaner. I'd also give Prog a wide berth, not because I don't like a lot of it, and not without some regret at eliminating King Crimson, but because of the opportunity for the wholesale dismissal of all that nonsense from ELP and Yes.

This all leads to the 'fact' that you'd be hard pushed to beat almost anything that The Who ever did. IMHO.
