Hi, could anyone tell me if thermo blocks are strong enough to hold the weight of an rsj? We are thinking about knocking through from the living room to the dining room and the gap would be 2.5 metres long with an rsj of 2.9 metres, would the rsj be long enough at 2.9 metres? Any information anyone can give me would be great. Cheers

You would need a suitable sized padstone or suchlike to take the point loading of the beam

The beam only normally needs to be 200mm longer than the opening, but you need a suitably experienced person to confirm this

As Woody says, as long as you've got a suitably sized padstone they will be fine.

Thermo blocks are rated for compressive strength in the same way as concrete blocks, and depending on which ones you've got, they could be stronger than concrete blocks, but you won't know just by looking at them. Without any better information to hand, an SE will just assume they are 3.6N - same as they would for concrete blocks - and base padstone size on that strength.
Any wall built with Thermalite type blocks and modern cement mortar will generally be far stronger than a brick wall in a Victorian house.

More to the point, have you had an SE size your beam?
