We are having a cloakroom installed under our stairs. At present we have varnished wooden floors on which I am trying to lay ceramic tiles. Although a Victorian property it has had new thick floor boards replaced about 10 years ago.

I am using flexible ready made adhesive but after 36 hours they have not stuck and the adhesive is still soft.

I honestly did not stir the cement before using it.

Could this be the cause or is it due to the varnished floor boards

Any help appreciated

If the floor is non-porous then it's going to take an age to dry.

Also, the adhesive is very unlikely to stick to the varnish with any longevity.

Sorry to have to tell you that you should take up all the tiles and start again, this time following the adhesive manufacturer's preparation instructions to the letter.

Thaks for the reply. Re laid using diff adhesive all ok now thankfully

Er, OK. I'm just curious - did you scratch up the varnished surface before re-tiling?
