Can anyone advise wether its possible to run the LV wires for twin wire lighting through small holes drilled in exposed beams.

The power supplies also seem quite bulky, do they have to remain exposed or can they be hidden in the ceiling void or can they be sited on the other side of the kitchen wall which in our case just happens to be a garage?

Any suggestions would be welcome.

yes and yes (the shorter the cable run form the transformers the better, it is quite common to find the transformer for a low voltage light sitting next to it in the ceiling)

Ensure you keep any insulation well clear of the trafo, light unit. They can become quite hot. The correct term is Extra low voltage lighting. Extra low voltage (ELV) is 0-50 VAC Low Voltage (LV) is 50-1000 VAC.Also bear in mind that such lighting is patuiclarly sensitive to under/over voltage. This is why as breezer said the tail from the trafo to the light should be as short as possiblen Not as I have seen done, the trafo installed upstream from the switch drop.

Thats good news indeed. Thanks chaps :)

Are they any cheaper to run, do the bulbs last any longer?

They are not much cheeper to run however the bulbs last (I think) up to 100% longer.

the words "up to" are the question 1% is still longer, it really depends who made the lamp, when you first get it they usually have "economy, this will work" type lamps which function, but do not usually last THAT long but when the lamps "blow" get a good quality lamp

Bear in mind however that many of the components in different makes are made by the same manufacturer. Slightly different, but I recently took apart two computer monitors, one with DELL writen on the front and another with GATEWAY. inside they were both EXACTLY the same monitor made by LG!

pc monitors are not lamps. the example you mention is just badging some thing as a particular brand. same could be said of salad cream, sainsbury get their "own brand" from nestle

its not who makes it that is the real concern its the quality.

Besco sell baked beans for what 9 p a tin? yes they are made by a big name (well the beans aren't they grow) but its the "sauce" and bean count that is differnt, by a 57 varietys tin of beans and compare that to the besco own brand, both beans both make you F**T but its the Quality you are paying for

Well - at the risk of a second "political" statement tonight, that's not true if it's made by those murdering Nestle scumbags.
