Hi,

I want to be able to dim the upstairs hall light from either upstairs or downstairs. The only way I can think that this will work is to use those electronic touch sensitive dimmers (assuming they reset when off or do they remember the previous light level when you turn them back on?).

Was wondering if anyone has done this already and if it works or not? Open to other suggestions :)

Thanks,
Glenn

Only ONE of the two-way switches can be replaced by a dimmer. Replacing both won't work.

You need to choose a dimmer which is designed for two way use (usually the kind with has a push on/push off or a separate switch - not the kind which rotates all the way to switching off with a click)

Obviously, you can only adjust the light level from one place, but you can switch it on or off from both

maybe should have taken a closer look at spark123's link.

Look carefully at the wiring diagram and check that your wiring can be used/adapted to suit the way that these dimmers like to be connected.

Yes, why???

Surely, you need a good bright light with minimum shadow to light the 'case?

Dimming the light on the stairs is madness if you ask me.
I have the same opinion.

If you really must have "mood" lighting on the stairs then keep the simple On-Off lamp and switches to give reliable and bright light when using the stairs and add a second lamp(s) with dimmers for the mood lighting. That way when the dimmers or under run halogen lamp(s) fail you will still be able to have lights on the stairs.

Thanks for replies. Slave \ Master looks like it will work for me :)

Why dim? I set it as a night light when going to bed incase one of the kids gets up in the night. It's a small hall with no sockets or other lighting so dimmer seemed the obvious solution.

B&Q were selling a unit that replaces the ceiling rose and can be worked from either remote wall units or a remote like used with a TV.

However they will not work with energy saving lamps so other option is using dimming lamps which don't require any alteration to switching and are energy saving.

If you google remote light switch or remote light control there are 100's of options as to how to do it. I don't think you need us to point you to a product it's just a case of selecting which one suits you.
