Unable to record digital channels

I have a TVonics MDR-240 connected by SCART to my Samsung PVR, when I set a timer to record from the digital input (AV2) the PVR switches on and back off immediately. If I press the instant record button while watching a digital channel I get the message "unable to record copy protected film" regardless of whether the programme is a film or not. When the recorder is set to one of the analogue channels it functions as normal. This did not happen with my previous Freeview box (a TVonics MDR-200) - have I missed something?
