Something unusual has started happening on my laptop. Previously, if leaving the machine idle for 3 minutes the screensaver kicks in. Upon resuming activity (keyboard or touchpad) the screen then displays its most recent content. All pretty standard stuff, I guess.

Currently, following the screensaver appearing, any action results in the windows XP sign-on screen (to begin click your username). Clicking here then takes you back to the previous screen content but it seems to take 30 seconds or more to do so, whereas before it was instantaneous . Any reason as to why this should start happening now? The XP sign-on screen has never put in an appearance previously (other than when I set the laptop up originally over 3 years ago). Would a recent windows update have had any influence? Thanks for any advice. ;)

sounds like the screen saver settings have been changed to ask for "authorisation"

check this

start>control panel>display>screensaver. make sure the box"On resume, password protect" is not ticked
