Unusal Gas Fire Question?

Hi,

This might seem strange, (not this bit ...) we have a gas fire and the back to the fire has a material like feel and is coated in a sooty type finish (the fire is brand new).

In dusting the fire the back material has been scuffed and th 'black' rubbed off and now looks bad.

Can this be re-coloured? Running the fire does not 'burn it back to black!'
