Currently the connection to my electric oven is by 6mm2 twin and earth connected to the oven wire via a 3 way chocolate block ! There is no cooker switch or CCU. Previous house owner did this. I want to upgrade the circuit so that I have a cooker switch and CCU. I can do the upgrade using the existing 6mm squared cable. If I do this will the work be notifiable to building control? All advice appreciated. Steve.

Given the state of the CU, wires running all over the joint, joined together using chock block/insulation tape, the earthing arrangements, lack of equipotential bonding etc etc etc I suggest it may be time to bite the bullet and have the whole lot rewired by a qualified spark, if not at least have a periodic inspection report carried out to see the extent of the work required to bring the existing installation up to current standards.

Hi. I agree that the wiring is a bit of a mess. I was hoping to do as much upgrading work as possible myself and then get a qualified electrician to inspect/test/certify. I plan to run a new ring main into our kitchen that I am upgrading as well as fitting the new CU. I am a degree qualified electronics engineer by trade so I understand about volts/amps/power/safety etc. electrical theory and I have done lots of reading about correct installation methods. Not sure if it would cost just as much in the long run with the building control notification fees + inspect and test fees. Any advice on that would be appreciated. Steve.
