Vaulted roof/open ceiling for porch double pitched roof

Seen the ridge beam sitting on both inner and outer skins, with it forming some protection for the outer skin from rain. With it sitting on wood on the inner skin, is there enough strength or should restraints (metal straps to skin) be used?

Just seems odd with it sitting at the top of the walls between a few blocks!

So long as you build the roof correctly, with an understanding of how a roof works, then all of the roof elements added up together provide a very strong stable structure.

If you are not sure how to do it, get someone in that does.
