Hey guys,

Im sure you have all replied to many many posts in regards to problems like this, however im new here and just cant find exactly what im after so your advide would be great.

Im am in the process of opening up the original fireplace in my victorian semi.

Previous it had been closed up with new brick.

As you can see on by the pictures, i have removed the new brick at the front but expected to see an arch or lintel. Then i got to the sort of 'half arch' you can see.

Apologies if these images are sideways... i have no idea how to turn them!

Also, the sloped sides on the inside are a little confusing to me.

So my basic questions are,

How high can i take this?
Might there be a lintel/arch higher up?

How wide can i go with it???
Are the sloped areas likely to be new and can i take them out as they are not well installed/pointed. Just chucked in.

Hope to hear from you all soon.

Many thanks
