volt free room stat

Can anyone explain exactly what a volt free room stat is? Does it stil require the 3 wires to it, ie/ common, call and neutral? Or does it do away with the neutral? Mine's old and was just browsing a catalogue today and came across some but was a bit confused?

Battery operated device - just live and switched live - or a low voltage pair.

always struck me as an anomoly "volt free"

as a stat is only a switch what does a "volt free" switch actually switch

You are correct - it is just a switch.

This is as distinct from something like a programmer with mains output from its relays. This gives a switched live out.
