VW Golf 55 plate

The engine symbol is showing suggesting defect on daughter's car. Las time it was ABS light refusing to extinguish and VW garage wanted over a grand to fix it until they were told it is a known fault.

Car was in for service and this light came on a few days later. Car has only clocked 18k, so much for German quality

Any help or guidance would be much appreciated

Without reading the fault code, it will be impossible to diagnose. You can buy readers relatively inexpensively or a good independent should be able to do it for you. I've had VW's for some time so invested in VAG-COM, which is a good diagnostic tool.
