Q1 do all modern washing machines have integeral immersion heaters?
Q2 what problems could arise when plumbing-in a w/m in a flat?
Q3 hot and cold supplies linked with a "Y" how does this arrangement work? does anyone have a picture? what catalog would carry the "Y"?

1) 99.9 yes they use it to raise the incoming water temp to the required washing temp

2) noisey

3) the hot water fill actually takes the soap powder from the soap draw (wrong spelling) so by using a Y piece you use cold instead, but the rinse is always using cold water, so thats why you need two pipes

a y piece looks like it says it does
