What are dowel centres for?

What are these dowel centres for? How are they supposed to be used?

You drill your dowel holes in one bit of wood, insert a dowel centre or three, offer it upto the second piece of wood and the point on the centres leaves a dimple so you can locate the hole in the correct place.

you can get the same results without a jig or dowel points
knock in a series off panel pins leave 12mm sticking our cut off the heads with a pair off pliers place a 9mm bit off wood at the side off the panel pin tap till the hammer rests on the wood

line up both halves press/tap gently so the heads mark the wood highlight the marks with a pencil
remove nails with pliers
use a woodwork drill with a /\ point make shure it sits on the mark
drill holding the the drill as squarley to the work as possible tape the bit 4mm deeper than half the dowel

incidently i pay £5 for 4 points and loose about 10 a year lol
