An easy way to test any unknown material, burn it!! sounds daft but it you cut or break a small piece of and burn it (outside!) timber will burn with white or gray smoke and a yellow flame, plastics tend to have a black or very dark smoke and a whole range of coloured flames and asbestos just wont burn!! this is only a rough guide as there are always excptions but normaly works.

And if it's AIB (Asbestos Insulation Board) you've just contaminated an area with asbestos fibres and opened yourself up to prosecution under health and safety legislation as well as potentially causing yourself health issues in the future.

Thanks for the reply. I think the general consensus is that the board was some sort of softboard and didn't contain asbestos.
Just a quick question I was asked the other day. In a property that was built around 1880 and has plaster and old wallpaper what would be the best way to remove it and would the old wallpaper and old (lime I think) plaster contain any asbestos. Thanks!

Asbestos unlikely, but impossible to tell by date alone as work may have been done to the property no one is now aware of.

the fibres in lime plaster is horse hair and wouldnt be a health hazard but as denso 13 states you must be aware of updates to plaster and sure it is of that date.
