Hi Guys

New to the forums and looking for some guidance.

I've just rendered a two brick walls in a bathroom and looking to tile
over the new rendered walls.

1. How do i prepare the new rendered walls for tiling.
2. What adhesive should i use for the new tiling.

Cheers, Jagz

The render must be fully dry; 2 weeks minimum. Generally no preparation is required but always follow your chosen adhesive manufacturer’s instructions; do not use PVA. Any quality trade adhesive will be OK but avoid cheapo DIY products; use a cement powder adhesive for large/heavy format tiles.

Not sure about your choice; personally I've never used it but I did say a QUALITY trade adhesive & grout :LOL:

What type, size/weight are your tiles? Is this a wet area?

Wickes stuff is quality lol.

I've been using them for more then 10+ years.

The area i'm going to be tiling is for a bath surround.

Going to be using big tiles i guess.. got to find out as i'm doing it for
a friend of mine and shes on a budget.

I don't surpose you can point me to the right direction for some
QUALITY trade adhesive & grout mate :)

btw .. I ain't no qualified builder lol
I've juts got two mitts in various pie's :)

Hope that helps. :)

I use them for a lot of general building stuff, even tiles but not tile adhesive/grout.

Skimping on the quality of adhesive & grout is not wise, particularly in wet areas. Use inferior or unsuitable products & it can all go terribly wrong in a very short space of time as many who turn up on the Tiling Forum looking for advice have found out; in many cases it’s a case of rip it all down/up & start again. If it does go wrong, you will certainly wish you’d spent that little bit extra to guarantee a good & lasting tile job.

What type of tiles; ceramic, porcelain, natural stone?

I'm going to be using ceramic tiles.

I understand what you mean - If your going to do it then do it properly
with the right tools and materials which is my moto to.

The tiling area is quite small and not that big.

If you can let me know what good tile adhesive/grout to use and were to
buy it from then you can save me the hassle.

I'm looking to do my parents bathroom aswell which i've just built not to long ago.

Cheers,

The wickes stuff is okay, I've used it loads of times, never had any problems with it. But if your after a name wont go far wrong, using unibond products.

Yeh was looking at the UniBond stuff as well.

With either go with Wickes or UniBond.

Will let you know when i've done the job :)

Cheers Again, Guys

Thanks.

Most pro tillers would not be caught dead using that; it has a reputation for being cheap & nasty ****e. Do a search of this & other tiling forums & see what the pros say about it. I repeat what I said previously about using quality adhesive & grout which include Webber, Mapei & BAL (which I use exclusively) but there are others;

For BAL & ceramic tiles up to 30 x 30cm use this;
http://www.bal-adhesives.co.uk/products/grip
or
http://www.bal-adhesives.co.uk/products/green-star
For tiles larger than 30 x 30 cm use this;
http://www.bal-adhesives.co.uk/products/rapidset
For grout use:

Dont say I didn't warn you ;)

BAL is good i have used that on the odd occasion, never had a problem with unibond, in fact I used it to lay a bathroom floor not so long back, that was all over the place, and it was great.
But I'm not a pro tiler, just friends and family.

BAL and Mapei are very good, I have used the wickes shower room adhesive stuff quite alot too and never had any problems, think I used it first about 4 years ago on a customers job that supplied it and it's all as it was to this day (it's a student house and i go back every now and then for odds and ends.

:)
