I'm about to leave full time employment as a theatre lighting & sound installer and take the plunge into self employment. I'm currently in the process of updating my qualifications for both BS7671 & BS7909 and will be looking to join a competent persons scheme soon.

For a sole trader, looking to work in both entertainment industry electrics and domestic, which scheme would people recommend joining and why? I get the impression that NICEIC is still the most widely recognised and accepted but I do wonder if it's just a case of "paying for the name"?

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for PLI providers?

NICEIC (inc. Elecsa?) is virtually the only known one and you may be, as you say, paying for a name as it seems to be the only one stipulated by bodies that don't understand the situation.
However, Napit is around the same price.
Stroma are cheaper.

The only reason to join any of them is to allow self-certification of the very few domestic jobs which are still notifiable.
You won't need them for commercial work.
