had to track a ring/socket fault - loose wiring - socket mounted on skirting board, pretty old.....the earth wires at the back of the socket were white or light grey, anyone seen this before and know how old this is?

could be for any reason. age, light exposure, chemical reaction, poor manufacture may all have turned the colour.

more helpfull would be what the sheaths made from? are the conductors stranded or solid?

how longs a piece of string?

could be down to an aincient diy'er who did not have the benefit of this forum in the days of steam? :)

Is the wire cotton covered? Pre 1950
Is the wire rubber covered? Pre mid 1960s
Is the wire PVC covered ? any time to date.
Actually before the '70s it was common to earth up in bare wire, so I'd expect bare copper, or tin coated copper
Is the wire just an offcut of the wrong stuff? could be anything then.
Are all sockets the same or just one or two?
Are the other colours red and black.
Note east european wiring had red earth, black live grey neutral,
until recently. Could it have been done by an East German on holiday? Having nearly made a fatal error with OstDeutch wiring in the past, I am wary of that one.
