OK, long story short. I have unfortunately got myself a builder with bad workmanship. He has done the following:

False ceilings (bathroom)
false ceilings (studio room)
Plastering
electrics
Customer wood works
Laminate flooring
Plumping
tiling bathroom
Gas (relocating boiler)

I am really concern of the safety aspect of the electrics, the quality of the work. Below are a list of things I want to get someone to check on

-Electrics
-Tiling
-Flooring
-Plastering
-gas
-wood works
-false ceiling

I am located in the UK btw, I was thinking of getting a survey done, but in the UK, surveys really don't get into that much detail. So who can I get to get all of these things checked without getting into too much expense? As I believe getting specialists for each area would probably costs thousands of pounds? I could be wrong.

But please shed some light as to who I should contact to give the house a quick check over for safety and quality measures.?

Many thanks for the help

Get a gas safety inspection and an electrical one too if very concerned, those things imo shouldn't be messed with by someone who doesn't know what they are doing.

Hope you've not paid for everything yet!

You need to ask the mod's to move this post into the building forum where Wise Man Woody will answer.

A structural survey will pick up the details you need. Very different from a building survey.

Instruct a building surveyor, and tell them that you want a report on quality of new work. Normally, this will be an "Expert report" that is used when claims are part of legal or court action, and will details the work done and compare it to any applicable standards, so tell the surveyor that the report must meet this criteria.

Tell the surveyor/firm your problem and what you want to use the report for, and they should then know what type of report to write. Be clear on this, and get the firm to write it down and repeat it back to you so you can see what report you should get.

Gas and electrics will need a report from a suitable qualified person, but you can this this included into the main report so that the surveyor can comment on any issues found.

Try and get what you can resolved with the builder first though. And also try and get some agreement with the builder that the report will be binding on you both. There is also the issue of the cost of the reports.

If you think that the claim may end up in court, then use a surveyor that is well qualified, and is experienced in providing 'expert witness' services to court. And if it will go to court it is important to pick the correct person. A structural engineer say, can not comment on plastering or tiling as its outside his field of expertise. A building surveyor can, and his opinion carries much more weight than any other professional for those works listed
