Ok, I managed to cut the black phone line coming into the house. I bought a BT66 junction box, my plan being to join it to the internal cable using that (yep I know it's "illegal" but I am not paying BT £200).

However, I have just read that the main line coming into the house has a strong electrical current in it.

Is this true and how can I wire it without getting a shock?

very carefully, and hope that no-one calls your number.

The on-hook voltage is 50V dc and the ringing voltage is about 70V ac. It's the ringing that gives the tingling.

It won't be dangerous unless you have a heart condition or it surprises you and you fall off the ladder.
