Woodburner insulated flue connection

The double wall insulated stainless steel flue sections for my woodburner have a sort of twist-on/bayonet type connection. The male end comes with a silicone band around it, covering the engaging teeth.

Does anyone know if these bands are supposed to be left on, or are they just for protection during transit and handling?
