Woodchip Ceiling: Skim or "smoothing paint"?

The secret to removing wood chip is to use the scraper to remove the chips - then roller on loads and loads of hot soapy water until it almost falls off.

Thanks guys I will buy that long-handled scraper and take it from there.
I think a mate has a steamer, if not will buy that too

Steamers are useless. Do the soapy roller trick.

Will do mate - thanks. I have never used a steamer before, in the past it was old school hot water and sponges

I tested the dining room ceiling with my finger and boy is it crumbly.

I've spent the last few months removing woodchip from every ceiling in the house we just bought. I tried the steamer on the ceiling, I wouldn't recommend it unless you like really hot water rolling down your arm and dripping onto you. Oh yes and of course the ceilings are in terrible shape underneath. Currently getting them all replastered.
