Painting a fireplace

The fireplace in my house is pretty hideous, and I've no funds to replace it. It is dated and mahogany coloured but pretty sure it's not solid wood. What would the process be of painting it black, which would go some way to kill the 80's vibe. Or do I wait for it to be the height of fashion again!

I'd paint it in ivory coloured eggshell paint, not black.

Don't paint it !! Take it out, sell it at a local car boot, then buy yourself a modern mdf painted one.

Yes, I have to agree, on reflection. Painting it would probably mean sacrificing some of the detail. It would perhaps look better with a different fire.
