Noticed that with 3c&e, one core carries a 'signal' rather that mains L,N or E.
Then thinking about it, that's the same/similar to linked smoke detectors.
All sharing one cable.

How does that square with 'separation'?

The signal wire is considered to be mains, as it isn't isolated from the mains supply, even if the appliance doesn't actually put full mains voltage on it (it might in the event of a fault though).

Because its insulated to the highest voltage present within the containment.

Same way that I can run 12v through a trunking containing power wiring if I used a 2-core mains rated flex. But not if I used bell wire.
